For many years, I have taken daily walks through the woods near my home. With this drawing, I attempt to translate what that walk can sometimes feel like, when the skin that separates me from air, mud, and grass becomes highly permeable. The open mouths suggest a type of communion--through consuming (eating) and being consumed (decay). Both these actions offer a connection to the eternal, however one may define it. The title, The Grail, is the name of the place where I walk. It also refers to the vessel used at the Last Supper that became legend during the Middle Ages, symbolizing body, blood and immortality.
